Secure Local Authentication: Implementing a Self-Hosted WebAuthn Server

The Context: "The 3 AM Trigger"

We wanted to deploy passwordless authentication across our internal tools, but using commercial provider APIs would mean routing our users' biometric verification challenges through their servers.

The Problem Statement

Validate user biometric key challenges locally using hardware-backed WebAuthn authenticators.

Visual Architecture: The Flow

The Core Logic / Process

WebAuthn Server Deployment

  1. Independent Authentication Engine: Runs locally to generate and verify signature challenges.
  2. Local Key Storage: Storing public keys in an encrypted database volume.
  3. No External Handshakes: All authentication occurs directly on your infrastructure.

The "Baigan" Take (Expert Insights)

Biometric and hardware keys are personal identifiers. Sending verification logs to corporate clouds is baigan ka compromise. Verify challenges locally on your own authentication servers.

Performance & Implementation Checklist
