Local Secrets Management: running HashiCorp Vault on Sovereign Hardware
The Context: "The 3 AM Trigger"
A cloud provider's secrets vault had an API flaw that allowed cross-tenant reading under specific race conditions. We immediately migrated all service credentials to a local bare-metal HashiCorp Vault node.
The Problem Statement
Inject and manage runtime credentials across local microservices without writing plain text secrets to disk.
Visual Architecture: The Flow
The Core Logic / Process
Hardening the Secrets Core
- Manual Unsealing: Enforce Shamir's secret sharing scheme with keys distributed across multiple developers.
- Encrypted Storage Engine: Local backend encrypted using AES-256-GCM.
- AppRole Authentication: Service containers query credentials using short-lived tokens.
The "Baigan" Take (Expert Insights)
Your database credentials and API keys are the keys to the kingdom. Keeping them on a shared public cloud is a baigan-level disaster waiting to happen. Run a local Vault instance and unseal it manually.
